Ouderbijdrage (parental contribution)

All state-funded schools are free. However, all schools expect a parental contribution to help defray costs of special events at the school. Most primary schools have a parental contribution of around 40 euros per child per year. In some schools, this contribution will also cover class trips. In other schools, there is an additional small fee of around 25-30 euros to cover class trips. There are usually funds available for low-income students and the child will never be expelled from school or excluded from (most) trips if the parents can't pay. In fact, in some schools serving low-income neighborhoods, parents can "work off" their contribution by volunteering at the school.
